Nicaragua Ultimate Club League Round Robin # 2 Review

Pensacola, Florida (Chasen Brokaw/Breaking Borders) -- I wish I could have been present at the second round robin, but I am extremely grateful for those who helped make the day a success when I could not be present. I have been busy enjoying all the great southern food America has to offer- fried chicken, biscuits, shrimp, and hushpuppies. So thank you to Israel, Rodney, Nathan, and all the team captains for making this second round robin possible while I was unavailable. I look forward to being back for the third round robin on November 16th in Tipitapa!

Round 1: Disc Magnets vs Warriors

The day started with the Disc Magnets playing against the Warriors. Dave Boone made his presence known by starting and ending the game with 2 assists for a total of 6 on the game. The Disc Magnets are composed of a mix of new young talent and a group of older players who have been playing longer than some of their younger players have been alive. Disc Magnets won 13-1.

Round 2: Tornados vs Hormigas Locas

Based on their previous game in the first round robin I thought this would be a closer game, but it seemed like the Hormigas were still waking up when they arrived to the fields. Martin Lumbi and the new jerseys were the only bright spots for the Hormigas in this game as Martin scored both of their goals and the jerseys made them look like a real team! The Tornados used a well balanced approach with 9 different players scoring and took this game easily 13-2.

Round 3: Disc Magnets vs Tornados

This was the game everyone was waiting for. A clash between the two teams who have won the last 3 Club Championships. One of the matchups we all were looking forward to was Blanca Lira from the Tornados vs Julia Holsinger from the Disc Magnets. They both fought hard and pushed each other to play their best. After exchanging points and both teams showing off their firepower the game was tied at 11. The Disc Magnets received the pull and moved the disc down the field. The Tornados were not going to give them the game easy and forced a turnover on their own goal line. They moved the disc in the opposite direction and one of the “Big Three,” Byron Rodriguez threw the final score to Angel Herrera for the victory. Tornados won 12-11.

Round 4: Warriors vs Hormigas Locas

The Warriors were without their leader David Lewis on Saturday due to a knee injury he suffered on his recent trip to the States. He was forced to support his team from the sideline allowing other players to step up. Luis Loaisiga, Eyner Vivas Aragón, and Paola Rivas caught scores from Joel Martinez, Rodney Juarez, and Jose Adan. Rodney Juarez lead the team with 3 blocks and 3 assists. After the Hormigas Locas rough start to the day against the Tornados they came ready to play in this game. They worked as a team and used 7 different players to throw assists to 9 different receivers. Kevin Medina lead the team with 3 goals, 4 assists, and 1 block. Hormigas Locas won 13-6.

Round 5: Hormigas Locas vs Disc Magnets

One of the benefits of the Club League is that all the teams get to compete against each other more. On any given Saturday and Sunday the Disc Magnets get to play against or with the Tornados. But this was the first game between the Hormigas and Magnets and we were excited to see what the results would be. The Disc Magnets continue to mix their experience with young athleticism effectively. Dave Boone lead the team with 7 assists, but the points were scored by 8 different players. Julia Holsinger and Dan Turner lead the team with 3 goals each. El Abuelo, Chris Allodi, decided to make an appearance in this game and threw three assists and added one block. Another story worth sharing is the new crop of girls playing with the Hormigas. All 5 ladies contributed in every game offensively and defensively and helped calm down this young group of passionate gunslingers. Marling Herrera lead the ladies with 2 scores in this game. Disc Magnets won 13-9.

Round 6: Warriors vs Tornados

In the last game of the day the Warriors had to go up against the Tornados. In their first match of this inaugural league in Granada the Tornados won 13-2. This was going to be a test for the Warriors to see if they had figured out a way to put some more points on the board against the far more experienced Tornados. Although the Warriors played better than they did last time, not having their leader, David Lewis, left them lacking and the high powered offense of the Tornados was too much too handle. Tornados won 13-2.

Results for Round Robin # 2

Every round robin and every game in this league counts. By participating in each round robin teams receive 1 point. For every win they receive 2 points. For losses they receive nothing. The team with the most points at the end of the league will be ranked in 1st place for the Club Championships allowing them to play against the 4th ranked team in the semifinals.

  • The Tornados receive 7 points after ending the day 3-0.

  • The Disc Magnets receive 5 points  after ending their day 2-1.

  • The Hormigas Locas receive 3 points after ending the day 1-2.

  • The Warriors receive 1 point after ending their day 0-3.

Conclusion

Three big things were unveiled on Saturday. The Hormigas Locas are rocking new jerseys,  the Disc Magnets are very much alive, and the Tornados are sitting comfortably in first place of this inaugural league after two round robins. Will the Disc Magnets be able to overthrow the Tornados once Ruben Gomez, Chris “Chachi” Farrington, and Daniel Bain return to full action? Or will the Tornados step up to the challenge and defend their championship dreams? A lot is still to be determined in this league. All teams are showing signs of greatness and we can’t wait to see how it all culminates in March.
