Nicaraguan Ultimate Club League: Preview of Round 2

Managua (Chasen Brokaw/Breaking Borders) -- The Nicaraguan Ultimate Club League is composed of 3 round robins, one each in Granada, Tipitapa, and Managua and Torneo Cocibolca in January 2020. Teams gain points by participating and winning games. After these 4 events points will be added up to determine rankings and all will be decided at the Club Championships in March 2020.

Results

We have already completed one round-robin and in case you have forgotten what happened, here are the results:

Every round robin and every game in this league counts. By participating in each round robin teams receive 1 point. For every win they receive 2 points. For losses they receive nothing. The team with the most points at the end of the league will be ranked in 1st place for the Club Championships allowing them to play against the 4th ranked team in the semifinals.

  • The Tornados receive 5 points after ending the day 2-0.

  • The Hormigas Locas receive 3 points after ending the day 1-1.

  • The Warriors receive 1 point after ending their day 0-2.

  • The Disc Magnets receive 0 points for not participating.

Preview

On Saturday, Oct 12th 2019 the Tornados and Disc Magnets will be hosts to the Warriors and Hormigas Locas in Managua at NCA International. We expect some interesting dynamics to be played out as teams have now had ample time to practice and correct mistakes from the last round-robin. We will see if the Tornados extend their points lead over the other teams or if they will fall due to potentially feeling over-confident. We will see if the Warriors have figured out a more organized offense. There are rumors that the Hormigas Locas will have some new jerseys to show off. Personally, I am very excited to see how they turned out. To make it even more of a mystery, it is still unknown if the Disc Magnets will decide to come out of hiding and participate! If the Disc Magnets decide to play it will bring more competition to the other 3 teams, a longer day, and will give us a better view of who might come out on top of this league.

Team Review and Players to Watch For

Tornados: Andy Genet, Zeke Rocha, and Byron Rodriguez. Will this trio be able to match their dominance from Granada in August? Or will other Tornados step up and provide a more balanced approach?

Hormigas Locas: Will Grandpa Chris be able to control this group of speedy, passionate throwers, or will he have a front seat to Granada’s best new soap opera?

Warriors: This team has had almost 7 weeks to practice. Will the leadership have taken advantage of the time given leading to more balanced play, or will we see another slow start out of the gates?

Disc Magnets: Dan Turner; the face of the team, or just the face that was put on the jerseys? The only other question we could ask, and that could be considered equally as important, is the rumor true that this team has the greatest potential age range of all participating teams? Will the mix of experience and young legs be enough? Or will the balanced athleticism of the other teams provide a rough welcome to this inaugural league. Keep a look out for Dave Boone to throw it deep whenever he can and for Julia Holsinger to run her matchups into the ground.
